Discover how SLES has enabled Robbie to explore a variety of work experiences, helping him learn more about himself and his interests.

Motivation didn’t come easily for Robbie after finishing school. Unsure of what he wanted to do, but aware that he needed to gain valuable skills and work experience to become work-ready, he began working with his Help coach Alex, in April 2024, at the age of 20.

He opened up to her about his lack of motivation and confidence around working and expressed his desire to find something he was truly passionate about, to build a career that he would be proud of.

During their sessions through Help’s School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES), Alex and Robbie worked on developing a plan to help Robbie achieve his goals. Initially, they focused on building a relationship of trust and understanding of what Robbie wanted to accomplish. They discussed his interests, strengths, and areas where he felt he needed support.

They also worked on his resume, interview preparation, and how to be prepared for and answer common interview questions. “Robbie was open-minded and willing to try different work experience options to gain a variety of skills and discover his true passion,” said Alex.

Diversity of skills and opportunities

Robbie’s SLES coach Alex started advocating for him in the local community to find new opportunities to build his skills.

One of Robbie’s first work experiences was at the Salvation Army Nursery. His role was to sort, maintain, and water plants. “Robbie told me he enjoyed being able to work with his hands and outdoors,” commented Alex.

Following that, Robbie participated in work experience at Help’s Supply Chain Services in Ipswich. His responsibilities included quality control, and packing products all while working as part of a team.

After completing this experience, Robbie shared with Alex that he’d always had a deep love for animals and would like to explore opportunities to work with them.

Encouraged by this desire, Robbie and Alex visited the local animal shelter in Ipswich to explore volunteering opportunities. “Robbie was excited when he was invited to attend the induction, and he’s now an active member of the AWLQ Ipswich Animal Rehoming Centre,” said Alex.

Barista in the making

Robbie also shared with Alex that he had some previous training in hospitality that he’d acquired during his senior school years, and that he was interested in pursuing by his hand at working in a cafe.

With that information, Alex began contacting local cafes in his area until she found a unique opportunity at the cafe in Summerland Camel Farm, in Harrisville, where they serve camel milk products!

Robbie has been in work experience there for six weeks, working two days a week. “It’s impressive how quickly he settled into the role and became a respected member of the team,” said Alex.

His responsibilities include customer service, food preparation, and maintaining a tidy workplace. He is even learning how to make coffee! “Robbie really threw himself into his work, impressing his colleagues with his positive attitude and willingness to learn,” proudly commented Alex.

Looking to the future

As Robbie continues to gain skills in the cafe, he’s shared that he’s been looking forward to his workdays and wakes up feeling motivated. “The feedback I’ve received about Robbie at work is that he takes direction well and shows initiative. He’s doing really well,” said Alex.

Working towards Robbie’s future goals, Alex will continue working with him remotely while he recovers from a planned surgery this month, as requested by Robbie to build on the momentum they’ve started. “I’d like to get more work experience and maybe work at a Bunnings Café one day,” said Robbie.

“I’m very proud to have been a part of Robbie’s progress and I know that he has a bright and promising future ahead of him,” said Alex.
