After working in Help’s supply chain team at Eagle Farm, Supported Employee Kevin decided it was time to make a career change and move to Hospitality. He jumped at the opportunity to be part of the Boronia Brew crew when Help opened its social enterprise cafe in the Brisbane Airport precinct, in March 2023.
“I love working at Boronia Brew. Baking and cooking are two things that make me happy, so this is the perfect work environment for me,” said Kevin.
One of Kevin’s favourite activities is preparing donuts. He started with close support from the team, and progressed so well that he can now independently prepare the donuts from start to finish. He now makes around 60 donuts a day! On top of that, he tackles any catering orders the cafe receives, ensuring every customer gets a taste of Boronia Brew’s hospitality.
“The best part of my job is watching our supported team members succeed”, said Linda Platter, Employment Coach Hospitality, who has been working alongside Kevin since his days in supply chain.
Kevin’s success has been so remarkable that he has started training other team members in the kitchen. “It’s awesome to learn new things and be able to help others learn too,” added Kevin.
Kevin’s confidence and adaptability have soared so much that he even changed his schedule to start early and now wakes up at 4:30 in the morning. “I do it so happily to come to work,” said Kevin with a big smile on his face.
Along with improving his cooking skills, Kevin has also developed his communication, customer service and social skills as every team member at Boronia Brew is trained to work at all positions within the team – from facing customers to washing dishes.
“I’m ecstatic to witness Kevin’s progress and be a part of his journey. It’s incredible to see him achieve so much at work and, ultimately, in his life. He is now confident to do more at home; he can cook for his family, he is comfortable handling and managing money. He can do anything he wants in his life”, mentioned Linda.
Boronia Brew is a social enterprise cafe owned and operated by Help and where people with disability can learn new skills, make social connections, and build independence. Boronia Brew provides people with disability a safe and supported environment where they can work towards their NDIS goals.
