One of our employees with disability wrote this poem to celebrate ‘International Day of People with Disability’. Though our poet prefers to remain anonymous, they wanted their work shared for this year’s #IDPWD2020.
We Do These Things Because We Can
I’m writing for this Day International,
A very good cause – not at all irrational,
And while the verse is based at HELP,
Some words & rhymes may make you yelp!
Excruciating phrases and questionable rhymes,
This seems to be happening at regular times.
So as the wheels of industry turn,
In turn the wheels of poetry turn. (hopefully!)
When all this makes the readers wince,
Just head to the cafe for bolognaise mince!
So much variety you must look around here –
The jobs and skills just grow each year.
Hidden talents with all our folk,
The creative arts are now awoke.
Artists and artisans, marathon runners,
Welders and makers of awnings and runners.
Collating, assembling, mailouts and nets,
Warehousing, horse riding and caring for pets.
Bowling and cooking and landscaping too,
So many activities social groups too.
Some of this is just for workdays – the daily skills we see,
Hobbies on the weekends – even more skills there be.
I can’t begin to list them here,
But there is becoming very clear.
With persons and skills so varied and vast,
“People with disabilities” cannot be typecast.
We do these things because we can,
We all play a part in HELP’s greater plan.
We do these things because we can,
Like climbing the mountain ‘because it is there!’
P.S So many of us are in transition,
And hope to advance to other positions.
With joie de vivre we contribute here,
The bolognaise has made this clear!
I hope all this meets your approval –
Now I must get back to rubbish removal!
